Compartmentalization is the practice of breaking down a program into groups of isolated components to mitigate the impact of security vulnerabilities. Although vastly successful in popular open-source software such as OpenSSH, compartmentalization is not a widespread software development practice. In this talk, we discuss and challenge compartmentalization approaches in OSS and academia to raise awareness on compartmentalization and show how it can lead to safer and more dependable OSS.
